Meet OOHO – Water Bottle That You Can Eat!
Have you ever thought of eating a bottle rather than discarding it? It’s no secret that plastic water bottles are causing harm to the environment. What if we can replace these bottles with something more environment-friendly? An innovative water bubble called Ooho! designed by the London-based Skipping Rocks Lab maybe an answer to the question. Ooho is the brainchild of Rodrigo Garcia Gonzale, Guillaume Couche and Pierre Paslier, the co-founders of Skipping Rocks Lab.

Ooho is a gelatinous double membrane sphere and a new way of packaging that propose an alternative to the plastic bottle. The encapsulation of water in a double gelatinous membrane involves the usage of a culinary technique of spherification. Furthermore “Ooho!” apply an evolve version of the spherification to one of the most basic and essential elements for life, the water. Dropping ice into separate solutions of sodium alginate from the brown algae and either calcium chloride or calcium gluconate lactate makes up the membrane.
Sodium alginate (NaAlg) coagulates when exposed to calcium chloride (CaCl2) and forms calcium alginate (CaAlg2 ) and sodium chloride (NaCl), according to the following reaction:
2NaAlg + CaCl2 –> CaAlg2 + 2NaCl

When the membrane solidifies and the water melts, a portable, eco-friendly serving of packaged water remains. Hence a final package of simple, cheap (2ct/unit), resistant, hygienic, biodegradable and even eatable blob is obtained.Finally,when you’re ready to hydrate, you simply pierce the membrane and slurp away.

The aim of the Skipping Rocks Lab is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact.
