“Sunday ho ya Monday,Roz Khao Ande.” As we all know that egg is a very nutritious food. An egg is a food generally laid by female species including birds,reptiles,amphibians. But most of us generally prefer the eggs laid by the chicken. The egg consists of a shell, egg white(albumen), egg yolk(vitellus) contained within various thin membranes.

Generally, we prefer egg white and whole egg i.e egg yolk with egg white for our diet.

But do you know,the eggshell is very rich in calcium carbonate ?

An eggshell is the outermost covering of the egg. The colour of eggshell varies due to variation in pigments deposition. Chickens with white earlobes lay white egg whereas chickens with red earlobes lay brown eggs. However, the colour of an egg doesn’t affect the nutritional value.

Calcium is essential for living organisms. Where the movement of calcium ion in and out of the cytoplasm is the cause for many cellular processes. It also helps in mineralization of bones and teeth.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our body.It is very much important for bone and teeth. Besides,it is responsible for the heartbeat,blood clotting,hormone secretion and nerve impulse.Our body doesn’t make calciums but in a daily basis, our body expends 100mg of calcium per day.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that women over 50 take 1200 mg of calcium a day. Excess calcium can cause numerous problems in the body especially if calcium is not accompanied by magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2. These nutrients help keep our body in balance and prevent our body from calcium buildup in the coronary arteries.

Health risk increases when we take excess amount of calcium.When there is a lack of Vit.K2 our kidney have to work harder to remove the calcium, creating calcification in arteries of low functioned kidney bodies.

Calcium from eggshells produces healthier bone:

A 2003 studying bone says powered egg shells helps in enhancing bone metabolism.And it has a positive impact on combating rickets , helps in improving cartilage growth,reduces pain and helps in preventing our bones from breakdown.It also helps in preventing and treating osteoporosis.

In 1881 and 1882, the Dutch scientist, von Nathusius told that egg shells contain 97% of calcium carbonate.So we use it to feed our animals to provide them proper calcium.

Are eggshell safe for human consumption?

Yes,of course, it is.Scientists have gone through many types of research and found that it is safe for human consumption.A study evaluated hip bone mass density of post-menopausal Dutch women. And it concluded that consumption of eggshell powder for one year increases the one density of a post-menopausal woman.

Are eggshell good source of calcium for the human?

Yes,the egg shells are a good source of calcium. Besides,it is a good source of strontium which helps in the formation of our bone and prevents our bone from osteoporosis.It is also rich in fluorine. Fluorine reduces teeth decay,increases bone density and fights against infections.

Egg shells vs. Oyster shells:

Generally, we produce calcium supplements from dolomite.It contains extra metals and lead.Supplements made calcium phosphates and calcium lactates contain small amount of calcium. So egg shells are very good for calcium carbonate supplementation.

How to make and use eggshell powder:

You can make it dry or wet.If you want to make it wet, then put the egg shells in the grinder,fill it half way up the egg shells with water then grind it and drain. For dry powder dry the shells thoroughly and then grind it.Otherwise, bake it for 10 min. at 200 degrees F and then grind it. you should consume 1 tsp. of powder daily, divided up amongst meals. You can mix a small amount with water or a smoothie or even add into foods such as bread, pizza, soup or spaghetti.
